What do you get if you cross a Ray with a Shark??
A Guitarfish! What??
We can see all sorts of special marine life during our Similan Island Liveaboard Cruises
on-board MV Oktavia - everything
from the smallest Nudibranchs
through to the amazing Whalesharks
and Giant Manta Rays.
All offer something incredible and unique, unbelievable
and magical. One such animal is the
Guitarfish.
This remarkable encounter was filmed by our Guide on Day 3 of our 5 Day Similan Liveaboard. Located in the shallows of Koh Bon Bay, our Guests were thrilled
to be able to see the rare couple swim by them in only a few feet of water.
The Guitarfish (sometimes mistaking called the Guitar Shark) earn their
name from their rather strange body shape.
Looking like a cross between the front end of a ray and the back end of
a shark the Guitarfish forms a link between the two and there is around 50
different known species.
More similar to a Ray than a Shark, the Guitarfish eat a variety of bottom dwelling fish and decapods such as shrimps and crabs. They can reach a
size between 90cm and nearly 3 meters depending on the species.
We had seen a number of the larger species at some
of the deeper Similan Islands Dive Sites
during the season – which is always special and encouraging to, but this sighting
was particularly memorable as there were two of the together and in shallow
waters.
Great confirmation
that the Similan Islands and its surrounding marine life offer the Best Scuba Diving in Thailand!
